That was a huge year for movies - and sequels in particular - with the title having to fight it out with Spider-Man 2 , Shrek 2 , The Incredibles , The Passion of the Christ , and The Day After Tomorrow for box office supremacy. The Goblet of Fire was always going to be a rather expensive movie to put together. After all, with the book being a huge , words long, there was certainly plenty of work to be done behind the scenes. Often considered including by me the best book in the series, Mike Newell helmed this pivotal chapter which saw Voldemort return from the dead and featured the first major present-tense casualty.
When he first showed up onscreen, maybe half of my packed IMAX opening night audience audibly swooned. Those thirsty teens and young adults were clearly ahead of the curve. The robust domestic bounce was all WB needed to commit to the entire seven-book series and pull Harry Potter out of the shadow of rival fantasy franchises. The date change shook up the year-end calendar, most notably in allowing Twilight to open not in December, but in the same pre-Thanksgiving spot where Harry Potter found massive success.
Order of the Phoenix was the first to open during a Wed-Sun weekend and opened almost concurrently with the release of J. David Yates made his franchise debut, and he would direct the last four Harry Potter films and thus far the first two Fantastic Beasts films.
I hope Christopher McQuarrie is taking notes on how to end on a high note and not screw up the eventual prequel franchise. Yesterday was Thanksgiving and some studios were closed for the day, but we have a full list of box office numbers today.
However, one of the studios that is reporting numbers is Disney and they are reporting record-breaking numbers. In fact, this is more than Frozen managed during its record-breaking wide expansion back in It had more impressive debuts in the U.
If the next installment in the franchise falls just as much, then the studio will have reason to be concerned. Additionally, neither Instant Family nor Widows matched expectations and this hurt the overall box office, which fell 2. Where it goes from here is a bit of a mystery. Both of those facts suggest shorter legs. However, the gap between Fantastic Beasts and the last original Harry Potter film may have resulted in a much more front-loaded run, so The Crimes of Grindelwald could benefit from that.
As always, we will know better this time tomorrow when Friday estimates are out. November 15th, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the latest installment in the Harry Potter franchise, but sadly, its reviews are, by far, the worst in the franchise. It should still have no trouble earning first place and will very likely break even just on its international numbers, but this is still troubling for its future.
The second biggest release of the week is Instant Family and its reviews are good, but not great. They are certainly fine for a family comedy. Widows is the best-reviewed new release, but its buzz is quiet enough that it will barely finish in the top five. The fun times end now. Why is that? Last November was amazing. This year, there are a lot more movies opening in November, but it is a case of quantity over quality. GKIDS is the only distributor that can routinely release animated films in limited release and have them do well at the box office.
Is it worth waiting for? February 8th, So why the hesitancy from Hollywood to step up to the challenge this time? Home Market Releases for November 7, November 8th, It is not a particularly strong week on the home market. Cars 3 is the biggest new release, but it is far from the best.
There were not a lot of contenders for Pick of the Week. Additionally, films like The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Wonderstruck are earning merely good reviews, but have enough buzz that they could still do well in theaters. April comes to end with two wide releases that have modest ambitions at the box office. Home Market Releases for March 28th, March 29th, Unfortunately, none of them really scream out as The Pick of the Week.
There are also a couple of busted Oscar-bait films, Archer : Season Seven is only getting a DVD release, while the previous seasons came out on Blu-ray.
Only Star Wars, super heroes, and dinosaur-themed movies have done better on opening weekend. Worse still, this is 2. Technically Frozen opened in limited release the week before and as we learned from Futurama , technically correct is the best kind of correct.
The film was a little more front-loaded than expected and nearly matched our predictions. This is 5. The film had the biggest opening of the Harry Potter franchise in 16 of those 63 markets, but ironically not in the U.
This is the third best in the franchise behind the two Deathly Hallows films. None of the rest of the new wide releases are expected to do much. Allied could become a midlevel hit, but I would be surprised if its budget was only midlevel. The low numbers may have something to do with the release of Shrek 2 during the same period. It grossed a whopping 1.
Either way, it outdid all of its formers by a mile. Ontario is no stranger to dock spiders who, despite their name, are found all over cottage country and not just on docks. Here are Who says that Christmas movies have to spread love and happiness through seasonal joy?
