In its first incarnation in —56, the goat is poised on a shelf attached to a Combine painting. According to Tomkins, Rauschenberg was dissatisfied with this version because the goat could only be viewed from one side. The Combine painting against which the goat is shown in the first state of Monogram was later reworked into the Combine painting Rhyme Barr, Jr. A preliminary sketch for Monogram shows that early on, Rauschenberg had considered mounting the goat against a nearly square rather than vertical panel and placing it behind a ladder.

The panel is from a dismantled five-panel White Painting from In fact it took four years before the artist was satisfied with it. If you walk around the piece you will see a tennis ball painted brown near the rear of the goat. You can guess what that represents. There is also the heel of a shoe and part of a police barrier. Rauschenberg liked to be inclusive. At that time, no other artists had used found objects as an integral part of their work.
